Asbestos detection can mean one of two different things. It can mean detection of asbestos fibers in the air, or it can refer to detection of asbestos in building materials.

Testing for airborne asbestos means utilizing aggressive air sampling to collect material that is floating around in the air of a home or business. This involves first stirring up dust to be sure that an accurate sample is taken, then collecting a sample to determine how much asbestos is loose in the environment. In general, the goal is to reach a level where there is less than 1 asbestos fiber per 100 cc of air.

You can also have building material tested in a lab to determine whether it has asbestos in it. Simply take a sample of some building material that you think might contain asbestos to a local lab certified to perform this type of work, and they will tell you whether the material in question actually contains asbestos.
